The façade competition, launched by publisher and homeowner Thomas Voelckner in 1993, is held annually with the aim of highlighting and awarding prizes for particularly exemplary façade renovation and design work, thanking building owners, highlighting craftsmanship and naming the companies and planning offices involved in the construction. The prize money provided by private sponsors is intended to honor the commitment of private building owners and create an incentive for imitation.

Since 2009, a special prize for energy efficiency has also been awarded by the city for exemplary energy solutions.
