Architectural Advisory Board

Since 1993, the Baukunstbeirat (Advisory Board for Architecture, Urban Design and Monument Preservation) has provided expert opinions on architectural, other architectural design and monument preservation issues that are of considerable importance for the preservation or further development of Jena's cityscape.

The task of the Advisory Board for Architecture, Urban Design and Monument Preservation is to draw up recommendations on urban development and building construction projects that have a significant impact on the preservation or design of Jena's cityscape. The recommendations are addressed to the building owners, the administration, the specialist committees and the city council. The Architectural Advisory Board discusses projects at the earliest possible planning stage:

  • Individual building projects that are of particular importance in terms of urban design due to their location, surroundings, use, size or other concerns, as well as
  • Urban development planning projects with particular relevance for the design.

If the project requires planning permission, the consultation should take place before the application for planning permission is submitted - if this is possible.

The Architectural Advisory Board consists of 9 voting members, made up of two architects, two monument conservators, one visual artist and four expert citizens. The advisory board is appointed by the city council for 3-year terms. Current members (term of office 2026 to 2028) are

  • Mr. Falko Bärenwald (nominated by the Association of Visual Artists)
  • Mr. Michael Bruckschlegel (nominated by the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation)
  • Mr. Hagen Höllering (nominated by the Chamber of Architects)
  • Dr. Hannes Hubrich (nominated by the Chamber of Architects)
  • Dr. Dörte Wetzler (nominated by the Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments)
  • Mr. Frank-Peter Trzebowski (nominated by the City Council)
  • Mr. Gisbert Bachrodt (nominated by the City Council)
  • Dr. Fanny Rödenbeck (nominated by the City Council)
  • Mr. Frank Otto (nominated by the City Council)

The Advisory Board usually meets once a month. The meetings are not open to the public. Topics are selected by the city administration, the city council or the members. The organization and management is the responsibility of the Department of Urban Development and Environment, Urban Planning Division.

The summary of the results of the consultations are made available via the City of Jena's council information portal under Baukunstbeirat. A PDF file containing the information for the public can be found under the "Information" tab for each meeting.
