Framework plan Westbahnhof

The current surroundings of Jena West station show deficits that do not do justice to the importance of the urban space as a gateway to the city and the neighboring "Neue Carl-Zeiss-Promenade". In particular, the quality of stay is too low.

The planned expansion of Jena West station into a mobility hub close to the city center is intended not only to restructure the area around the station in terms of urban development, but also to make Westbahnhofstrasse and Schillerstrasse, including Engelplatz, more attractive towards the city center.

In the meantime, a framework plan has been developed by the city administration and the commissioned planning office BahnStadt GmbH, which was presented to the city council and the city community. The presentation of the results took place on 04.11.2024. You can find the framework plan in the download list.

  • Presentation of a non-binding planning vision with a time horizon of 5 to 30 years at a scale of 1:1000
  • Identification of different development options depending on the availability of space and the willingness of third parties to participate
  • Development of an urban design concept (urban design, reorganization of uses and traffic functions, dimensioning and functionality of green and open spaces)
  • Consideration and integration of a streetcar route along Westbahnhofstrasse
  • Operational statements on rail and local public transport (tariff structures, cleanliness, safety, etc.)
  • Detailed specifications in the area of urban land-use planning or project planning (design and implementation planning - e.g. lighting, garbage bins, plant species, video surveillance, signage)
  • Design of the neighboring areas of Zeiss AG

Almost 200 comments on the various scenarios and variants of the framework plan were received during the online participation, and the pages on the Westbahnhof framework plan were accessed around 5,200 times on the public participation platform. Reason enough to take stock and say thank you. Thanks also go to the 60 or so people who took part in the planning workshop in the historic town hall on 21.02.2024. There, too, many good suggestions and ideas were put forward and constructive discussions were held.
