Community housing projects
Shared housing projects are no longer a rarity. Weimar and Leipzig are two municipalities in the immediate vicinity of Jena where housing projects have already been established. Shared housing projects are an expression of lively and diverse residential landscapes that offer people different options as to how and with whom they want to live.
In Jena, however, there was no communal housing project for a long time, a fact that led to a decision by the city council a few years ago. You can find the city council resolution under Downloads. Based on this decision, in December 2025 the city council founded Stadtverwicklung gGmbH together with the Housing and Neighborhood Development team to set up a process to launch a community housing project and thus establish the topic in our city.
Following a successful series of events organized by ÜAG last year, there has been increased interest in the topic in Jena. This can also be seen in the first housing project in Jena, which is already well on the way to realization, the An der Eule housing project.
Are you currently considering whether you would like to live in a shared housing project in the future? Then we would be delighted if you would take part in the Stadtverwicklung gGmbH survey. This will be used to determine the needs of the Jena population in order to plan the next steps appropriately. You can find the survey here.
Was genau plant die Stadt?
The city of Jena wants to promote communal housing projects at an organizational level in future and make them more visible. The aim is firstly to raise awareness of this form of housing and secondly to award a specific property as part of a concept award. The tender for this, which is to be published by 2027 at the latest, will be explicitly aimed at project groups that would like to realize a communal housing project.
Over the next two years, the planning office Stadtverwicklung gGmbH will support the city administration in identifying suitable public land and removing legal and organizational hurdles. The concept award resulting from this process will be professionally supported by the office and handled by the city's own municipal real estate company Kommunale Immobilien Jena (KIJ).
