Veins of Jena

Starting point

The Saale floodplains in the city center are listed parks from the 1950s - the Jenaer Paradies and the Rasenmühleninsel - and further south are near-natural floodplain landscapes. Over a distance of around five kilometers between the Jena-Paradies train station and the Winzerla combined heat and power plant, the ribbon of district heating pipes lies like a barrier between the floodplain landscape and the settlement area. Partly running close to the ground, partly elevated, they are one of the city's main supply arteries.

There are no plans to lay these lines underground in the future either. Despite their essential importance, these technical structures are generally not very popular. These two defining spatial elements could hardly be more contrasting: the organic, partly lovely Saale floodplains, much frequented and valued as a local recreation area on the one hand and the technical, functional district heating pipes on the other - a contrast with potential?

Vision

One idea of the veins of Jena is to see this contrast between the organic, lovely and appreciated - the Saale floodplains - and the technical, necessary and unloved - the district heating pipelines - as an opportunity for development and change. Because an unbiased eye can certainly recognize an aesthetic quality in this contrast. So why wish the pipes away and hide them?

Adern von Jena pursues the opposite strategy of integration and staging. Many small projects along the district heating route, developed in a network of partners and realized by a wide variety of actors in the city such as artists, schools, associations, companies and institutions, are intended to gradually lead to a positive image of the district heating pipes and contribute to a qualification of their surroundings.

The project is being implemented as a joint project between the city of Jena, Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck and JenaKultur as well as citizens and local players from business, culture and administration.
